At the Jackalope Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula, Doot Doot Doot isn’t just a restaurant—it’s an immersive sensory experience, crowned by a breathtaking lighting installation that captures the transformative artistry of winemaking.
Over 11,000 Globes Creating a Starry Canopy
Spanning an impressive 81 square metres, the installation is a dazzling constellation of over 11,000 individual light globes. Each globe serves as both a diffuser and a design element, transforming the ceiling into a luminous canvas that envelops diners in a soft, golden glow. Despite its vast scale, the installation is remarkably energy-efficient, with the entire piece consuming just 300 watts of LED power. This blend of visual opulence and sustainability is a hallmark of modern design excellence.
Inspired by the Art of Fermentation
The concept, developed in collaboration with Fabio Ongarato Design, draws inspiration from the alchemical processes of fermentation—an art intrinsic to the Jackalope Hotel’s identity as a hub of wine culture. The globes echo the bubbling effervescence of fermenting wine, capturing the magic of transformation as raw elements evolve into something extraordinary. Each sphere seems to hover weightlessly, a metaphor for the delicate balance and precision inherent in the winemaking process.
Four Months of Precision and Craftsmanship
The installation required four months of meticulous assembly, a testament to the craftsmanship and vision behind its creation. The result is a dynamic, ever-changing display: as light reflects and refracts through the globes, the ceiling comes alive with motion and depth, evoking the swirling energy of wine in a glass or the vibrant effusion of fermentation.
