ATLANTIC RESTAURANT SOUTHBANK by Jan Flook Lighting

Location: Southbank, Melbourne
Client: Atlantic Group

A Unique Lighting Concept on Melbourne’s Southbank

At the Atlantic Restaurant on Melbourne’s Southbank, Jan Flook Lighting has created a stunning installation that pays homage to the fluid beauty of the ocean. Commissioned by the Atlantic Group, this collection of 12 woven rope fixtures redefines lighting as both art and narrative, bringing a sense of connection and harmony to the space.

Symbolizing Interconnection Through Design

The design concept is rooted in the idea of inter-relationship—how individual elements come together to form a greater whole. Each trio of forms in the installation is crafted from over 420 metres of 12mm double-braided marine rope, an intentional nod to the restaurant’s nautical theme. The ropes are intricately woven and interlinked, creating a visual metaphor for interconnectedness and unity.

Woven Rope Fixtures as Sculptural Art

The fixtures are more than just functional light sources; they are sculptural works of art. The woven ropes create organic, flowing forms that evoke the movement of waves or the gentle undulation of marine life. When illuminated, the interplay of light and shadow within the woven textures adds depth and dimension to the space, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.

Atlantic Restaurant Southbank: A Celebration of Craftsmanship

Every detail of this installation showcases a dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. The use of marine rope not only ties into the Atlantic’s seaside theme but also introduces a tactile, natural element to the modern interior. The combination of robust materials and delicate design creates a unique juxtaposition that captures the spirit of the restaurant.

Transforming Space with Connection and Light

Jan Flook Lighting’s installation at the Atlantic Restaurant transforms the dining experience into something extraordinary. By blending symbolism, craftsmanship, and design, it offers more than illumination—it creates an environment that feels as interconnected and dynamic as the ocean itself. This is lighting that tells a story, one that diners will not soon forget.
