Mastering the Art of Lighting with Jan Flook

Mastering the Art of Lighting truly is an art, and a science!
Lighting has evolved far beyond simple function. Today, it plays a powerful role in shaping how we experience space. Whether in residential, public, or commercial environments, lighting transforms atmosphere, evokes emotion, and brings architecture to life.

In my own work, I see each light not just as a source of illumination but as a piece of sculptural design. It should contribute to the personality of the space. As I often say, “A light fitting should speak quietly, but carry deep presence.”

The Emotional Role of Light

Once used solely for visibility, light is now a tool for storytelling. Thoughtfully placed lighting can draw the eye, soften edges, and shift mood. Designers today are exploring how light can guide people through a room and highlight the beauty of materials and form.

“Lighting isn’t about brightness—it’s about balance,” I remind clients often. A room with poor lighting can feel flat, no matter how well it’s decorated.

Light as Art and Architecture

Advancements in LED and dimming technology allow lighting to merge with both organic and angular architectural elements. It’s now possible to create fixtures that feel like a natural extension of the space itself.

From bold feature pendants to seamless built-in lighting, each choice should enhance rather than compete.

A Shift in Thinking

Decorative lighting is no longer an afterthought. It’s integrated into the early stages of design planning. This shift means lighting isn’t just decorative—it’s expressive, artistic, and essential.

Ultimately, light helps define the feel of a home, gallery, or commercial space. It creates rhythm and focus, and brings architecture into its full potential.
